PENUMBRAL

July 17 - August 8, 2025

Galerie Sardine is proud to present Penumbral, an exhibition featuring paintings by Japanese artist Tenki Hiramatsu and light sculptures and paintings by celebrated New York artist, Nate Lowman

Penumbral is organized around the conceptual territory of partial revelations and incomplete concealments—where form and meaning hover just beyond full comprehension, never fully manifesting. A space where that which exists between light and darkness isn't simply mysterious; it's ontologically disruptive.

Tenki Hiramatsu presents a group of paintings that expand on motifs and techniques developed during his recent exhibition at a Zen temple in Kyoto. Hiramatsu's paintings both borrow from and subvert traditional Japanese cultural elements. His rich, meticulously built surfaces are distinctly subdued, yet deeply evocative. Hiramatsu's eerie, oneiric imagery leans toward a new realism while constructing environments that are simultaneously moody, dark, and luminous.

The exhibition also features light sculptures and paintings by celebrated New York artist—and friend of Sardine—Nate Lowman. Lowman gathers and reconstitutes the discarded layers of contemporary life, instilling new meaning into cultural fragments that might otherwise be overlooked. His works pulse with definitive wit—sharp, knowing, and subtly irreverent—while maintaining the conceptual rigor that has defined his all encompassing practice since the early 2000s.
